Spreading the word about Leos

As part of our workshop on Public Relations at Mid-Winter Rally 2006, the attending Leos compiled a list of effective ways to spread the news about your club’s activities. Read the list, try something new, and submit your own great ideas! Go to “Submit News” button on the website and add your ideas! Don’t forget to tell us which club you represent! Thanks to the following Leo clubs who contributed these great ideas: Abilene, Blue Valley West, Hillsboro, Humboldt, Morganville, Mulvane, Valley Heights

-Newspapers-call ahead of time w/basic info about upcoming event and contact info, email-get to know the local media and make regular contacts with them.

-Newsletters-Submit news to school, neighborhood, community and church newsletters

-Posters-post in school, around town, school pr at school assemblies, school newspaper about special, upcoming events

-Local businesses-ask for door prizes -do the advance work-go to businesses with a flyer or send out a week before your visit, explaining your cause and requesting door prizes; make sure to keep a record of these and acknowledge the businesses publically with a thank you in the paper or with signs they can post. Be prepared to give a receipt if they donate cash.

-Collaborating w/another well-known club-work together with 4-H, FFA, FCCLA,Scouts, Key Club, Lions or other organizations on big projects

-Social events-Make sure to have FUN once in a while-either combined with other activities or as a recruitment activity-invite other teens who are potential Leos for food, fun, door prizes

-Support other programs and projects in school and the community

-Promotional items-distribute brochures in school or at community events

-Make brochures for special events, or highlighting your club in general

-State, district, club websites and newsletter-participate by regularly submitting your news-get to know your district Leo newsletter and website editors

-Include a calendar in your club newsletter so everyone knows about upcoming events

-State newsletter-submit on a regular basis

-Conduct service activities that serve as PR like serving snacks and meals to fire, police departments
